Is Chiang Mai Safe for Tourists?

Common question selected by Portail Asie

Buddhist monks overlooking Chiang Mai from a mountain temple in northern Thailand

The question

I am planning a trip to Chiang Mai and would like to understand the main risks for visitors. Should I be concerned about crime, scooter accidents, scams or air pollution?

Portail Asie answer

Chiang Mai is generally straightforward for tourists to visit, and everyday crime is not usually the main concern for travelers. Normal precautions with valuables, nightlife and unfamiliar services are still sensible.

Road safety deserves more attention. Scooters are convenient, but traffic and mountain roads require experience. If you ride, you should have the correct licence, wear a proper helmet and make sure your insurance covers the activity.

Another important issue is seasonal air pollution. Smoke and haze can become significant during the northern burning season, particularly between February and April, although conditions vary from year to year.

For most visitors, Chiang Mai does not require unusual security precautions. Road safety and seasonal air quality are usually more relevant practical concerns than violent crime.
