Can You Drink Tap Water in Thailand?

Common question selected by Portail Asie

Thailand travel health essentials including a first-aid kit, mosquito repellent, sunscreen, bottled water, passport and boarding pass.

The question

Is tap water safe to drink in Thailand, or should I use bottled water throughout my trip? I will be staying in hotels and apartments in several destinations.

Portail Asie answer

For drinking, travelers should generally use sealed bottled water or properly filtered drinking water rather than drinking directly from the tap in Thailand.

Hotels, convenience stores, supermarkets and restaurants make bottled drinking water very easy to find. Many accommodations also provide complimentary bottles or filtered-water stations.

When eating out, food hygiene is often more important than worrying about every drink. Choose busy restaurants or street-food stalls where ingredients turn over quickly and food is cooked fresh.

If you are unsure about the source of water or ice in a very basic or remote establishment, it is reasonable to be more cautious. For everyday drinking, sealed or properly filtered water remains the simplest option.
