Smartphone using mobile data navigation in Bangkok with Wat Arun and the Chao Phraya River in the background, illustrating eSIM internet in Thailand

The question

I am buying an eSIM for my trip to Thailand. Should I install it before leaving home, or wait until I arrive at Bangkok airport?

Portail Asie answer

It is usually easier to install your eSIM before departure while you still have reliable Wi-Fi. You can download the eSIM profile and make sure it appears correctly in your phone’s mobile-network settings before you travel.

You should, however, check the provider’s activation rules. Some plans begin only when the eSIM connects to a supported Thai network, while others may start from installation or activation.

Keep data roaming disabled on your regular home SIM if you want to avoid accidental international roaming charges. Once you arrive in Thailand, select the eSIM as your mobile-data line and enable the settings required by your provider.

Preparing it in advance means you can have internet access shortly after landing for maps, hotel details or booking transport.
