Can You Explore Bangkok on Foot?

The question
I enjoy exploring cities on foot and Bangkok will be my first visit to Thailand. Can I realistically see most attractions by walking, or will I need to use public transport regularly?
Portail Asie answer
You can explore many parts of Bangkok on foot, but trying to visit the entire city only by walking is not realistic. Bangkok is very large and its main sightseeing areas can be several kilometres apart.
Walking works particularly well within individual neighbourhoods. The Old City, Chinatown and Talad Noi are good examples, as many temples, markets, streets and food spots can be explored on foot once you reach the area.
In modern districts such as Siam, Silom or Sukhumvit, walking within the neighbourhood is also practical, but travelling between districts is usually faster by BTS, MRT, river boat or taxi.
Heat and humidity can also make long walks tiring, especially around midday. A good strategy is therefore to use public transport for longer journeys and explore each neighbourhood on foot once you arrive.
