Is Grab Safer Than Renting a Scooter in Thailand?

Common question selected by Portail Asie

Heavy traffic with cars and motorbikes on a palm-lined road in Thailand during sunset, illustrating road safety risks during holiday travel

The question

I am considering renting a scooter in Thailand, but I could also use Grab for most journeys. Is using Grab generally the safer option for a tourist?

Portail Asie answer

For most travelers, using Grab or another car-based ride service is generally the lower-risk option compared with riding a scooter yourself.

Motorbikes leave riders far more exposed in a collision, and Thailand’s traffic, unfamiliar road rules, wet surfaces and busy urban areas can be challenging for someone without substantial riding experience.

A scooter can still be practical for experienced riders, but you should have the correct licence, wear a proper helmet and check that your travel insurance actually covers motorcycle use.

Grab does not eliminate road risk completely, but it avoids many of the additional risks that come with personally riding a motorbike in unfamiliar traffic. If you are not already a confident rider, choosing a car is the more sensible option.
